This web area was conceived when my three sons discovered their grandfather's "War Books". Comprising his pilots log book and a large number of photographs and negatives, we delved through it. I managed to pass on what I remember of some anecdotes he told, but it occurred to me that all this would get lost in time. No matter how hard you try to protect it, things age. I decided to scan everything and commit it all to computer archive, for members of my family, friends, any other historians or ex- colleagues who may have an interest.
Subsequently, others have visited and contributed. I am indebted to Mark Penberthy, who's father
was a 1 Sqn pilot, and who stil visits and chats with "Bomb" Finney. We have also had permisssion to publish some of the
photographs of Tom Meek.
I am not an historian - There may well be the odd technical detail on this site
that is not accurate. I am relying on anecdotal evidence from pretty much one source. I have had a number of e-mails
from various people pointing out that this picture or that picture shows an aircraft from 1941 with a double-filtered
doobiefidangle that wasn't fitted until January 1942 so it couldn't possibly be correct. Unfortunately, I don't have
the time or the drive to investigate each of these anomalies and make corrections, so please don't regard data on
this site as reliable reference material - go to the SAAF archives in Pretoria or at the UK Public Records Office in
Kew to examine the original documents for yourself. They are extremely helpful and have a mass of material now
preserved for posterity on microfilm.
